Brick Architecture in our Historical Cities

On 17 April 2012 a republican conference on “Brick Architecture in our Historical Cities” devoted to “18 April, International Day for Monuments and Sites” organized by Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Republic, Agsu region Executive Power and MIRAS Social Organization in Support of Studying of Cultural Heritage, was held in Agsu City.

The conference participants familiarized primarily with the results of archaeological excavations conducted in medieval Agsu town since March 2010, as well as conservation work and exposition. The section chief of Cultural Heritage Department of Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Republic, Arif Aliyev spoke about importance of brick architecture and noted Gilgilchay Wall which is the significant like the Great Wall of China, was built from adobe as well. Chief of Agsu Archaeological Expedition, Professor Gafar Jabiyev stated though Shirvan school of archaeology is of stone architecture, the latter was spread widely there during archaeological excavations. Associate member of National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Vali Aliyev speaking about early urban civilization in Azerbaijan noted brick architecture was known in old time. Associate member of NASA, Jafar Giyasi gave information on the samples of skilful usage of brick in elaboration of decor elements of Seljuk architecture. Editor of “Archaeology and Art” Magazine of Turkey, Professor Mustafa Nezih Bashgelen said they revealed the oldest model of usage of adobe in the world upon last archaeological explorations and their definition of that by radiocarbon analyses. PhD Fariz Khalilli brought into attention of conference participants construction of not only houses, but also fortress walls, palaces, mosques in medieval cities (14-18th centuries) are from adobe. Doctoral candidate of Azerbaijan Architecture and Construction University, Ugur Qiyasi told the participants monuments of brick architecture were restored and conserved lately, as well as informed on the future projects. Later the guests visited Shaki City and familiarized with the samples of brick architecture.
