The research trip to European cities within the framework of the project "Research and promotion of historical and cultural heritage of Shusha" has ended

The winner of the special competition dedicated to the "Year of Shusha" of the State Support Agency for Non-Governmental Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, "MIRAS" Social Organization in Support of Studying of Cultural Heritage, within the framework of the "Research and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of Shusha" project, sent Doctor of Philosophy Fariz Khalili for a research trip to Tbilisi, Budapest, Berlin, Paris, Rome and Venice according to its action plan. Fariz Khalilli visited those cities from August 28 to September 23 for the purpose of archaeological, ethnographic, paleographic, numismatic research of Shusha city and its surroundings and promotion of cultural heritage in academic circles.

Fariz Khalilli met with Elnur Aliyev, president of the Caucasus Heritage Research Institute in Tbilisi, and discussed joint cooperation in researching and promoting Shusha's historical and cultural heritage. Fariz Khalilli met with Teona Iashvili, the director of the National Archives of Georgia, and discussed issues of cooperation in conducting research in Georgian archives, giving reports at conferences and symposiums on the history and culture of Shusha and Karabakh, and publishing articles. Fariz Khalilli has started researches in History, Movie-Photo and other archives. He applied to use the funds and archives of the National Museum of Georgia and met with Irina Koshoridze, curator of Oriental collections. Research on inventory books in the Archeology, Ethnography, Numismatic funds of the museum has been started. Fariz Khalilli met with Faig Guliyev, the ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Leyla Aliyeva, the director of the Azerbaijani Culture Center named after Mirza Fatali Akhundov in Tbilisi, and donated a copy of the book of materials of the Fifth International Hamza Nigari Symposium to the embassy and the center. Fariz Khalilli got acquainted with the exposition of the museum and took notes. As part of the visit, Fariz Khalilli got acquainted with the David Gareji monastery and exchanged views on the state of the monument and the epigraphic samples, including Uyghur inscriptions. 

Fariz Khalilli participated in the opening ceremony of the 28th annual meeting of the European Archaeologists Association in Budapest. Fariz Khalilli gave a report on "Khanqah archaeology" in the "Interpretation of archaeological heritage from the point of view of art studies" section, organized by professor John Jameson, a member of the international scientific committee for the Presentation and Interpretation of Cultural Heritage Areas of ICOMOS. The report, which includes the Qaraagaj and Qarapirimli khanates of Karabakh, was received with interest, and it was recommended to publish it in the department's materials. In addition, he listened to the reports of the section organized by a group of young scientists related to the archaeology of the Caucasus. Fariz Khalilli, who met with Samantha Scott Reiter and Matteo Walsh, editors of TEA "European Archaeologist" magazine, a publication of the European Archaeologists Association, discussed the publication of the "Kalbajar report" and the news reflecting Azerbaijan's calls for "preventing the destruction of Tepebaşı neighborhood of Yerevan". Fariz Khalilli, who visited the Hungarian National Library, first donated the book of materials of the Fifth International Hamza Nigari Symposium to the library. Then he got acquainted with the rich book fund of the library, made extracts from books, collections and magazines about Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Fariz Khalilli visited the tomb of Gul Baba, one of the Sufi thinkers, located in Budapest. He got acquainted with the exposition of the museum created in the yard of the tomb and took many photos reflecting the exposition. Later, Buda Castle was visited, and the memorial monument where Buda Governor Abdurrahman Pasha was martyred was visited.

Fariz Khalilli got acquainted with the exposition of the Museum of Prehistory and Antiquities, Pergamon Museum, which preserves and displays Caucasian materials of the Museum Island of Berlin, and made inquiries about the museum funds. The expert confirmed that the Bronze Age materials discovered in Azerbaijan and given to the mentioned museum were mainly found in the Ganja region. Fariz Khalilli got acquainted with the exposition of Saint-Germain museum near Paris, where Azerbaijani materials are located. He applied to work in funds. Fariz Khalilli conducted research in two centers of the Berlin State Library and the François Mitterrand Foundation of the National Library of Paris. He reviewed numerous books on Shusha, Karabakh and the Armenian issue on the spot and made copies of them. In addition, he compiled a list of books and articles in the fund. It is planned to deepen the research in this direction in the future.

Dr. Fariz Khalilli met president of YOCOCU International Association, Dr. Andrea Macchia in Rome. Shusha was thanked for his support to the Scientific Committee of the Symposium, and it was agreed that he would join the organization of the Symposium. Later, Fariz Khalilli got acquainted with the analytical research center of YOCOCU Association. He was informed about new equipment, examples of conservation of human skulls taken from graves were shown. It was noted that in the post-war period, analytical research could be carried out and YOCOCU could support Dark Heritage research. On the initiative of the restorer-architect Angelo Broggi, the restoration of the building of the Dominican Order in Rome and the archaeological excavations conducted there were inspected. Ideas were exchanged about the concept of restoration of residential and administrative buildings in the city of Shusha, and the prospect of conducting archaeological research in and around those buildings. Correspondence has been started with the Vatican library for the purpose of conducting research. Fariz Khalilli attended the training on the management of cultural heritage in the building of the Italian Ministry of Culture in Rome, moderated by Valeria Acconcia, an employee of the ministry. The training program continued at the University of Gabriel d'Annunzio in Pescara and at the conference center of the SERINAR organization in Forli. Fariz Khalilli visited Correr museum, Archeology museum and Venice library in Venice. Registration was made and photos were taken of the oriental works in the museums. In the Korrer museum, he got acquainted with the map made by Fra Mauro in 1457-1459 and depicted the Karabakh mountains, and quality photos of the map were taken. Fariz Khalilli met with Domenico Patassini, professor of urban planning at Venice IUAV (Venice University Institute of Architecture) and Aldo Ferrari, professor of Armenian studies at Co Foscari University. Discussions were held about the manuscripts stored in Venice and the question of their accessibility, Christian Turks and their written heritage. Fariz Khalilli met with Professor Luigi Scrinzi, who developed a restoration concept for Shusha mosques, and noted his ideas for research. In addition, Fariz Khalilli contacted Pastor Gizin, one of the current leaders of the Basel mission, which operated in Shusha in 1822-1835 and made Shusha the center of missionary activity in the Caucasus, through the Milan center.

As a result of the research, Fariz Khalili's scientific seminars are planned to be held at the end of October.
